The Maytag dryer is an HDE-606 made prior to Nov, 1971.

Whirlpool avocado dryer is a 1976-77 LDE5700.

The washer is an LDA-something, lower-end with presumably three temps and one fill level.

The GE pair is from 1976 - the year with the yellow/gold consoles.  The exact pair that I owned when I was fresh out of college.

Top on that Maytag DE806 looks to be not attached and is catty wompus. Probably attempted to replace the high limit thermostat by my guess.

RE: reply #5

If you will look closer, you will see a pilot light above the center dial mounted in an opaque plastic control panel so probably not a DE806.

Five basic vintage appliances in Arizona

Thanks for posting Laundress, however, I think all five of these are probably Destin to be scrapped and turned into a new Hyundai, doesn’t look like anyone’s bidding on them.

Early days yet

launderess's profile picture
One just posted listed here in group just barely a day ago. There are still eight days left to bid, one never knows does one?

Many auctions one has posted here in group sat sitting without a nibble until last few days.

Not only does word need to spread but given nature of these sort of auctions people have to make decisions. First and foremost is fact this isn't eBay. You bid, you pay soon as hammer falls (assuming one won). No refunds, no ands, ifs or buts....

Thus if not local or even if are people need to get ducks in row regarding collection and possible shipping. Some auctions will work with winning bidder, others aren't so flexible. There may be only one set collection date and if winning bidder doesn't collect things are forfeited.

While many of these appliance auctions do say "shipping available" I wouldn't trust it.

Many of these auctions are done by people who seemingly cannot manage shipping a small appliance without it being damaged. One shudders to think what could happen with a large major appliance.

If person cannot travel to collect item themselves or find a trust worthy person willing to do so, only other option is putting feelers out on UShip or similar place to see what there is. Once shipping is nailed down then persons can bid I shouldn't wonder.

Being as all above palaver may be; yes many vintage washers on auction sites don't see bids and likely meet a horrible end. You can't save everyone I suppose.

What I learned

pulltostart's profile picture

My curiosity got the best of me and I called the auction company and asked questions.  Here's what I learned:

I explained that I've not used HiBid before and could he walk me through the process.  He explained that if I place a bid, I will then have to register and give a credit card.  They will charge $1 at that time, and it will be applied towards the bid should I win.  I can also stipulate my maximum bid amount.  This auction will end on Thursday the 18th.  All items must be removed from the building by Saturday at 6:00 pm.  There is no grace period as the building has been sold to the city.

I asked about shipping and he told me that they use a lady by the name of Suzanne (an outside vendor) for shipping questions.  Her phone is 479.644.8525.  When I talked to Suzanne she said that she could not ship anything as large as these appliances; if she can put it in a box, she does and she uses UPS.  However, for a fee ($75) she said that she could remove the items from the existing location and move them to her facility and hold them for a couple of weeks until shipping can be arranged by the buyer.  She rents a house for this purpose; it is located in Zip Code 64856, there is not a loading dock, it is a residence with a basement.

BTW, this is in Rogers, Arkansas (not Arizona).

While the idea of getting this matching pair is fun, I have no business launching into this venture (think back to the turquoise GE range).   It would seem that an out-of-town/state buyer could make it work fairly easily. My plan would be bid and see if I won before arranging shipping (probably with Uship), especially since Suzanne wouldn't be in a hurry to move the appliances out of her place.

Both parties were easy to talk with and were helpful.

Many Hi-Bid and other auction houses use third party shippers. This usually is disclosed in bidding terms listed with auction. Any or all shipping arrangements for said auctions again normally are included with auction listing. For host of reasons including legal this is necessary.

Third party shippers can be anyone such as packers and shippers connected with or own local UPS, FedEx, PackMail and other local shipping franchises.

Then you have persons who make their living, full or part-time, going about collecting items from auction houses and taking them to FedEx, UPS, USPS or whoever to be packed and shipped. You pay this person to collect and transport item to shipper or shipping service. You may also have to pay (reimburse) this person if they pay shipping charges on your behalf.

Same persons as above instances also may offer to store an item until Uship or another shipper of choice can be arranged to collect. They may pack/crate item, or simply leave it as it was collected from auction house/estate sale.

Few caveats are in order.

In nearly all instances once item leaves auction house/estate sale it is no longer their responsibility. If item is damaged, bits or entire thing goes missing buyer is on his/her own. All such issues must be addressed to third party shipper/person who collected item.

It is important to understand clearly (and this should be in writing) terms of collection, shipping and all associated fees. This includes fees for storage and when or if they will apply. Some third party shippers start charging storage fees if things are not collected or shipped within "X" amount of days.

Also terms of payment should be disclosed including how long one has to pay invoices and what happens if things go unpaid.

Some third party shippers will consider things "abandoned" and or "forfeited" if invoices are not paid and or shipped within a certain period of time.

HiBid like other online auction services are not eBay. There isn't any sort of visible feedback system where buyers can vent or let others know of issues with a seller. HiBid and rest do have an internal feedback system available to sellers that ranks buyers. If persons do not pay invoices, initiate chargebacks or otherwise go afoul of a seller he/she will certainly leave negative feedback. That likely will cause one to be banned from bidding on platform for duration.

Some sellers are willing to make allowances and listen to buyer's side of things. Others don't care and if you're on that list don't bother bidding on their auctions.

Have used third party shippers in various flavors from HiBid and other auction houses. Held for UShip, sent by UPS/FedEx, etc.... and am here to say when all is said and done one often pays dear for even just a $10 winning final bid.

Once contracted with these third party shippers or even with auction seller doing shipping themselves one cannot back out. They know this and often shipping charges are simply astronomical.

One pays huge sums for "packing, shipping, shipping materials" only to have thing arrived in some beat up used box taken from rubbish pile. Little if any new or decent internal packing materials such as bubble wrap, peanuts, etc... Just bits of newspaper or whatever else they can fetch out of trash or have lying about spare.

Even so called "professionals" at UPS or FedEx sort of pack and ship places aren't that much better.

Upshot is things often arrive damaged. Some sellers will work with one on this; others are "tant pis", things happen. Again if one initiates a chargeback no good will come of it, so there you are then.

It’s a DE606. Made a typo since I put DE806, not DE606. Though, typos happen to all of us here on the site from time to time.

I picked up all 5 yesterday. The ge washer after alot of cleaning works great. it has a green ramp activator. the matching dryer the motor or something is froze. the WP washer runs great and will agitate but when it is time to spin it makes the buzz noise but no change in motor sound and the basket will turn so i dont know whats wrong and advise for getting it to spin. the maytags cabinet is in bad shape and ill look at it later. havent looked at WP dryer either.

Presumably you meant to say the basket won't turn?

Buzz noise being the spin solenoid engaging?  Does the buzz stop/resume accordingly when the lid is opened/closed?

The spin shift plunger or rivet may be broken.

Check the water pump. It may be locked up a common problem with the older machine that has sat for a long time.

Am always happy when a member speaks up about something one has listed. Nice to see one has helped save another vintage appliance from the crusher.

It's also refreshing when a member lets us here in group know out come. This as opposed to machines that vanish into ether, never no more to be heard about again.
