I in the process of buying this Kenmore fridge on CL. I love the 70's woodgrain an chrome together, and the set in door handles. I cant find it in any of the 70's Sears catalog. So does anyone know what year this one is, or a catalog page and or ad?

It might be later than '70s.

Others here will know exactly when Sears dropped the "Coldspot" brand for their fridges and started calling them Kenmores, but it could have happened after 1979.

Sears 1985 Spring and Summer

I have this catalog and it states this line was introduced in the
1984 Christmas Book.

This line was called "Kitchen Mates". $969.99 in white and $10 for color.
Available in white, platinum, toast, and almond.
Kenmore 20 Series (19.6 cu. ft.)

The wood look came from "Kitchen Mates Panel Kit".
A 2-panel kit that included reversible Ranch Oak/Barton Hickory and
a set of black acrylic panels. Both sets installed with one as backing
for a snug fit. Kit $149.99

These refrigerators were also available in a side by side model.

Interesting note, estimated annual energy cost, at that time $74.

This style also had a similar side-by-side.  Designed by Sundberg-Ferar for Sears/Whirlpool.

There was a thread about an older Coldspot/Whirlpool refrigerator just the other day, here.  Also by Sundberg-Ferar (for Flora!).

S-F designed a lot for WP/Sears over the years, have a look at their website and the history page, lots of pretty pictures including of the S-x-S refrigerator of this 80's style.

It Looks so 70's and out of date for 1985 lol.....I love it though, cant wait to get it home, and get rid of this stupid cheap Hotpoint thing.

Considering im paying $75.00 im am VERY PLEASED to know that it broke a grand in 85, and somone HAD to have paid that with the woodgrian panel kit...

I just scrapped a similar one. It was in Platinum, and had black plastic panels on the front. I saved the doors for another one I have.

Mid 80s Sears Refrigerators

These were very good refs and it was the last of the real porcelain on steel interiors for Sears refs Made By Whirlpool.

When WP bough the Kitchen-aid name they came out with a line of KA Refs that had real POS interiors, POS meat and vegetable drawers and extensive use of metal instead of plastic in the interiors [ 1987 ]. The POS unfortunately only lasted till about 1991 and was gone forever, WP was the last company in the world to build such good refrigerators with POS interiors.

This Sears ref should be a ref that could last 30-40 years if it was well cared for and continues to get good care. The current cost of operating it will easily exceed $100 per year, you could replace the fan motors with ECM motors and the 8 hour defrost timer with a 16 hour timer and reduce the running time and cost by about 30 dollars a year [ doing this would also make it last longer and keep food in the freezer longer ]

Hi John,

I had to re-read your post a few times before I realized that POS meant porcelain on steel rather than Piece of Sh#(t

:)

I'm amazed that anyone was still building POS lined fridges that late in the game

Cheers

Nathan
