And another year has flown and we are meeting up at Als Emporium over our final August Bank Holiday of 2018, as plans go with vintage appliances "There Are No Best Laid Plans" we had thought that this hols would be an open showcase of everything shipshape and tickety boo but life goes on and time runs away...So a small gathering of the "Get Stuff Sorted" party ensued and another work and fun weekend took place.

Getting stuck into the Line of Hotpoint Toploaders are Steve (SESteve) and Danny, this 1502 toploader was given to us by Mark Hill who he and his dad ran one of the last Hotpoint Service centrs in and around Norfolk and
Mark moved to Malta last year. Its a solid machine and is one of the quietest every made having a cast gearbox which the later series didn't.

And heres Phil (ServisSlimline) and Chris (ServisChris) getting stuck into their (and mine) favourite laundry appliances. This was Servis UK first front load auto washing amchine. Its was sold as the "Most Compact" at only 22.5 inches wide and still taking a 9lb washload, given the Bendix Giromatic wash in a 30inch cabinet this fitted into British homes with ease. Its needing a new door boot and bearing which are still original from 1972.

With the washer outside we took the tub apart, now Steve has done many repairs on these machines and I like others said was always daunted by how to take it all apart, which was quite easy when the teacher is methodical and says "Right, Your Turn" lol..
Here we see the top console flipped over onto a chair so we don't need to disconnect all hoses n wiring , with inner tub removed we proceed to taking out the outer vitreous enamel tub, this was the last series for the 1970`s with metal tub, from this point on until the 90`s the outer tub was polypropylene. |

So after breakfast a few of us went over to Garys place to collect a few machines he was passing on, that's the beauty of this hobby, fix up, restore and recycle.
So Jon & Danny in one car and Mikey n me in together and guess what we all saw at a crossroads and immediately there was a screech of brakes... On many petrol forcourts are these vending laundry systems, From Kis Laundry systems come an 8kg and 18kg washing machines, soft mounted with fast spins and an 18kg tumble dryer, they dispense autodose Amway detergent. FANTASTIC! Good god that was well done fellas - you really did it up! Thanks all for sharing -
Truly, you can see and feel the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie from 3500 miles across the Atlantic! Love all those Twinnies - they seem to still be pertinent over there more than they are here. Have to ask: whats the bank holiday you guys are celebrating? Type of Labor Day, like us on Monday? And please urgently send over some of Steves Millionaires Shortbread..."tickety boo!" |

That phrase means something entirely different (in U.S. history) than what you are celebrating.
When Roosevelt took office as president in 1933, at the depths of the Great Depression, one of his actions was to close all the banks for a period of time, to prevent panic withdrawals. Hence, the term "bank holiday". I'm assuming your holiday is nothing of the sorts. |

On a very basic level "bank holiday" on both sides of pond pretty much break down to same thing; days when banks are closed and or employees are given off/paid OT if they do work.
For instance the last Monday in August is "bank holiday" in England/Wales. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_holid... While first Monday in September is Labor Day and a "bank holiday" in that the Federal Reserve is closed, which by extension means so are nearly all other banks in the USA. Labor Day is also a national holiday in that many (but not all) businesses are closed. In a way both serve one same purpose, they extend summer holidays by a bit. |

Hello Johny and welcome to the club and madhouse, yes its good to get together and sort stuff out, as with anything vintage they always need a little coaxing and nurture..
Yes the twintub washers where a staple of UK laundry rooms and kitchen, compact and easy to move around, and probably why UK housewifes were the last in the field to move to automated laundry appliances. My fav is the Servis models being the ones mum and family had..

Hello Fred, thanks for the explanation of your Bank Holiday, its easy to dismiss as just a holiday without realising the significance. It is a tradition when our banks and companies shut down for a workers holiday.
Its the last holiday for us so everyone tends to make more of it especially as in August - which is usually or hottest month but alas this year cloudy and rainy... |

Wow Al, the house looks really wonderful and the wash house amazing. What a fabulous presentation of machines through the years. I've got the same radiator in my bathroom, they belt out some right heat.
Looking forward to coming down again to see you some time. I don't come on here much due to work commitments but hoping you are keeping well. Richard |
