It's a sad day.

I managed to score some German market Persil the other day while in Brooklyn and was super excited to give it a try in the next boil wash. Loaded up some bath towels and chose a cycle... and nothing. A moment later, the lights dimmed and the control panel started to pop and smoke. Woofed out the plug and shut the whole mess down.

We opened the front panel and found out one of the wires on the water valve had come off and managed to short to ground. It melted several wires in the main harness of the machine, and caused who knows what damage to the rest of the electrical components.

I think it's over for this one. I'm going to hold this machine for a week or so in case anyone wants to take it for parts. The machine was working well before the failure.

I could die for you!

Was it the water valve you replaced a while back that caused this trouble?

Cannot recall if your W765 ran purely on 208v-240v power, or had 120v components.

If latter is true would love to have the pump, timer/programmer, and maybe some other bits such as motor, as they may fit my older Miele which is generation after yours.

Again am so sorry to hear about your Miele's sad demise.

It does seem they die that way... You do a load and everything is fine, next time you come back to use machine *boom* it won't operate properly or at all. That's how it was with my Miele timer/programmer. Didn't miss a beat on previous load, but next time went back it wasn't working properly.

Seems like only yesterday you got this washer. About nine years ago during same holiday time of year.

Laundress, it was indeed the repair that failed. We were very careful when we did the work, and the wiring was on the spades very well. I happen to have an electrical engineer in the house so we had done a thorough job with the wiring. It was heartbreaking to see something so small cause its demise.

I do have a W765, but I'm on the other side of the ocean.

It’s in decent shape. The top is a bit damaged from moisture but there’s no rust inside. There’s going to be a dryer on top anyway.

Congrats!

Always nice to see when a door closes a window opening somewhere.

Much as one loves older mechanical/electro timer Miele washers think you'll love the W1926 more than W765. These are near commercial quality washers (many laundries and dry cleaners used W1926 units for wet cleaning service), that are built to last.

Lucky you nabbing nearly new units. Those look in very good shape and thus should give many, many years of service.

Enjoy in good health!

Wow that’s a good looking machine! I’ve frequently seen one of these on display at an appliance store near me, but they’re not for sale, and aren’t used as they’re just a display model. I wish I could get my hands on one of these some day, they’ve always appealed to me! Best of luck with this machine!

Keep looking

On FB, CL, and elsewhere, 19XX units pop all the time. Some going for very little money. Problem usually is finding one close enough local.

Thanks all!

We had some balance issues on the first go, but that seems to have settled. I'm going to try and get the dryer mounted on top - I just need to find the electrical splitter box... though that might be a reach.

Henry, I hope you can liberate that set someday! Thanks Bradford. I'll have to get the laundry room all cleaned up and take a set of tour pics... I don't think I've ever shown it.

I'm in the process of taking the W765 to parts; if anyone is in need, please let me know. I'd love to see parts go to a good and useful home. Not sure if anything would work with the new machine.

Thanks Pete!

Here's some pics of the laundry room in its original configuration, just as we were putting it together.

Its better - you can fill it with water and it turns!

Thank you... it took a lot of work to get there.
