Hello everyone. Ken Yourist here. It’s been a number of years since I’ve posted anything on the website.
After retiring five years ago, my partner Jim and I moved from Detroit to Tucson to escape the harsh winters. We’ve gotten used to the hot summer weather here, and are happy with our decision to move.
With mixed feelings, I sold the machines I had in Detroit, to make the move across country as simple and inexpensive as possible. Since moving to Tucson, I’ve made some new friends, including Roger LeQuea, never a member of aw.org, but a collector of old appliances nonetheless.
He passed away just a few weeks ago, leaving his appliance collection. Most machines are on the “older” side, some are newer. However now, according to his wishes, they are to be disbursed to other collectors who will appreciate them. What is shown in the photos below is what is available as of today, March 8.
The machines are offered gratis/free. Roger’s brother, Steve, will handle logistics with anyone interested. Final decisions are all his to make. I am only involved posting this in an effort to help clear out the washers. The machines shown, as far as I know, are all in relatively good working order. However, there are of course no guarantees. You may contact Steven at 520-578-1718, preferably earlier in the day, for arranging a pickup. I don’t think he will want to be at the house waiting for a shipping company truck to show up. He doesn’t live that close to the location. So this might be best for someone who can actually arrange an exact date and time for getting a machine. If you would like more information, before calling Steve, I may be reached at 313-320-7098. I should have, but didn't get a good photo of the gold Maytag in the left of the GE. It's a very nice machine as well. Sorry some of the photos are sideways. It's just the way they posted. Also, the Whirlpool is a "Resource Saver" model.
The machines are all located on Lee Street in central Tucson. Those not somehow picked-up or shipped in the next three weeks or so, will be donated, if that’s possible. Otherwise they may be, unfortunately, disposed of. I hope that at least some of the machines will get into the hands of someone who will enjoy having and using them. One machine per person, or possibly more. You'll have to talk to Steve. Especially if they are all still sitting unclaimed in a few weeks.

Hi Ken,

First, I'm very sorry to hear about Roger's passing.  I've been to his home a number of times and it was always a laugh-fest accompanied by some fun with washers.  The most impressive among them the last time I visited was a rebadged Norge design, I think, that had the longest spray rinse I've ever witnessed.  I think it may have exceeded three minutes, and it effectively eliminated the need for the subsequent deep rinse.

I hope all of his machines find good homes.  Last time I was there he still had some machines out in the carport area that needed work.  He may have thinned the herd since then.

I think I saw maybe one comment here by Roger over the past dozen years but he still has a profile under "rogera608s."  Here is a link:

Roger was one of the hosts of the Tucson wash-in years ago, maybe 2007? I had such a nice time meeting him and spending time at his place with all the folks and machines. So sorry to hear he’s passed away.

If I remember correctly, I believe Roger and Hippiedoll often collaborated on fixing her Maytag and Frigidaire machines.

When Norge introduced that long spray rinse in the early-mid 60s, the segment on the timer was labeled "EXTRACT."

There is a Roger of Tuscon, originally from the Buffalo area who was a good friend of Ross, recently departed. When I last spoke to Ross, a few years back, he was having lunch with Roger, but this Roger is a member; he has a thick hatch of light hair, and stylish glasses, and practices law if memory serves. Enjoyed many interactions with him. Ken writes that Roger was never a member of Aworg. Sincerely hoping that the Roger I know, a good friend of Christine Hippiedoll, will shortly chime in with "the news of my death has been greatly exaggerated."

If I have this all wrong, forgive the insensitive error. Out on a limb here.

Tom, yes my mom's 67 Snorge had the "Extract" sequence on the dial.  I don't remember how long the spray was, though.  I avoided that machine like the pox on our house that it was.

Our 1963/1964 Norge, due to it being the new Plus Capacity, was the brand new design that had a perforated tub. Extract seqquence was the following: Begin drain for 1st timemr increment; 2nd timer increment was continuing drain (if slow speed spin, the drain took much longer and the timer was held until the pressure switch reset and began again). At about 30-40 seconds into this increment spin wuld start. After about 10-15 seconds, the spin mechanism wiould disengage and th tub would begin oastin down and just about the same time th timer advanced to the next increment, which was spraying and this spray would continue for that one increment (editorial comment--this was intended as "cool down" as well as suds kill and the tub would cease revolving long before the end of this one minute increment, which I consideered seless even at the age of 9, once there was no more revolving). Next increment the spray would turn off and the machine woould sit there continuing to pump out any water that dripped off fabrics. Next increment began spin again. My memory is foggy, I odn't remember if tis was a 1 or 2 incrrement spin period. (each increment is 60 seconds). The next increment turned off the motor, turned on the spray to begin filling for the deep rinse, and tub coasted to a stop. The next timer increment continued to fill for the rinse and the machine/tub beak did a "clank". Fill continued untill pressure switch satisified and agiitation began. Deep rinse was 5 minutes long with the final minute when softner was dispenssed. Then one minute pause and then two increments for drain period. The first increment for final spin included a 15-20 second spray until the timer advanced to the next increment. The spin continued for another 5 minutes, had a final minute where the motor turned off and the tub coasted stopped. The last increment clanked the break and the machine turned off.

Mickey —
Unless I am mistaken, this Roger was definitely not an attorney, nor from Buffalo. I believe he was from Minnesota originally.
I will call Steve later to see if anyone has inquired about the washers. But please do follow through asap, if you are interested in getting something. He also had a number of Maytag parts. If there is anything needed out there, that's hard to find, I can check his boxes of parts. Include a part number and full description please.
Ken

I am so broken-hearted
😪

I just talked with Roger's brother Stephen. He said Roger passed away on February 27th. It must have been a couple days after I had visited him. Roger was a dear friend to me and a blessing. If not for Roger, I wouldn't have been able to indulge in my interest of vintage washers. And because of Roger, I got into dishwashers. I had never used a dishwasher ever, and Roger gave me my very first vintage kitchenaid dishwasher to use.

I have some great memories of our times together. I'd spot something on Craigslist & I'd call him up, or vice-versa, and we'd head out to go check out what we found. Thank you Roger for the fun times & your friendship. I will miss you & your energy my dear friend.
💔😔

Rest in peace my dear friend.

💭🙏🏻

I feel the same pain. I've relived some of my memories and looked through the threads and Austin's video and I am taken right back to that time and remember everything. I've a couple of good cries today.
