I've recently been having an issue when I try to shutting the door on my 1.5 year old WXR860 it pops right back open. I have to hold the door closed while hitting the start stop button for it to lock and stay closed. The lock has always been a bit finicky from the beginning but never like this. It seems like it's defective and I should call for service. Anyone else have this issue?

Hmmm

Even with an empty drum?

The machine has a catch that basically holds the door closed.
That is spring loaded.
You see a hoop on the door itself, and a black catch on the lock. Closing the door swings the catch closed, catching the hook.

When the door locks, basically, only that catch is physically locked.

Now, that catch usually is spring loaded and has 2 stable states - open door, catch open, or closed and catch closed.

I have never heard that that system breaks, but still is abled to lock when closed.
Usually, the door just wont lock at all.
But there isn't anything else holding the door closed while not locked. So it can only be the door lock.

Maybe try activating the manual door release a few times and see if anything got stuck there.
That can basically override all door locking mechanics, allowing the door to swing open what ever be the case.

If you do have warranty, yeah, sure, use it.
If not, replacing the door lock is somewhat annoying, but not difficult.

Go to mieleusa.com -> Support -> Parts & Accesoriea -> Spare Parts Catalouge (midway down the page) .
Searching for the WXR860, on the second drawing (030), part 200 is the electromagnetic door lock which is surprisingly affordable at 90$.

Yes, it will pop open even with an empty drum! The door/door lock has always been temperamental. Previously once I closed the door and hit the start/stop button, the door lock would try to engage making a strange sound. I'd get a message to close the door. I'd have to slam the door shut but I didn't like doing that so what I've been doing instead is holding the door closed when I hit the start and the lock would engage without incident.

I will try your suggestion to activate the manual door release a few times.

And thank you for your tip to search for parts. I didn't know they had an online catalog. It's still under warranty so I will call for service if needed.

Posted this before in another Miele thread, but am saying so again; Miele USA has made much of what one once had to ring up CS or parts department to obtain now online.

This was done as part of vast overhaul of Miele USA (if not North America) many years ago now that shook things up. One can basically see and order parts same as what one previously had to ring up Miele's parts department to do back in day. System will give inventory, prices, and other information.

If appliance has been deemed obsolete by MieleUSA only limited information will be found.

Miele parts catalouge online

That is very recent addition, like this year, that has been launched a while after the new website design. Works even with professional machines, all the way back to the Novotronic days at least (W1986 works) and even professional machines (that's how I learned that the T1 little giant heatpump dryers use not only bigger, different drums but also the old TwinPower design with seperate fan motor).

Just haven't figured out linking to searches there yet.
And, curiously, if I acess the page through the US home page, the page I land on is in eglish, gives me US results with prices in $, but it is still a german top level domain.
