Morning All,

What with the good weather the weekend, i thought there is no better time to have a run through with the Westinghouse Laundromat 3 belt washer. I acquired this machine about 2 years ago, new from Italy, unfortunately the boot was totally busted and have virtually melted and was dripping inside the machine. Lovely John L aka Combo52 saved the day and had a used good condition boot which he kindly sent me (thanks John !!)

I know very little about these machines and would guess it dates from late 60's to early 70's ? It is a 3 belt drive machine with a single direction tumble action. In the UK English Electric produced 2 very similar machines called the Reversomatic range and came in an under the counter model 474 and a rear control panel model 484 Super (pic) The Westinghouse has many of the EE characteristics, although the EE range did reverse tumble.

See Youtube direct link in additional post showing the machine in action.

Cheers Keith

Hi Keith, it’s great that you got this machine running these. Bring back a lot of memories and we’re pretty capable machines. Only really bad thing was the spin speed wasn’t great.

I remember a family that we knew growing up that had the pair of these they had the electric dryer.

Mr. Mason was very handy and repaired the washer and dryer numerous times over the years. When the washer finally was beyond what he wanted to repair on it he bought a Maytag A606 from us in about 1977 so the Westinghouse lasted around 10 years or so the Westinghouse dryer lasted a few more years and we sold him a whirlpool 29 inch dryer to replace it.

The only thing good he could say about the Maytag was it was quieter but they realized pretty quickly it didn’t get clothing is clean and there was a lot more lint on the clothing than there was from the Westinghouse,

John

It would be great if you could do a full-cycle video. These are one of my favourite washers.

Hi Mike, the water you see coming in is where the machine fills, the first rinse is just a long spray rinse. It helps clear away the suds, so it sprays the water in on the clothing load as it tumbles

One of the neat things about Westinghouse washers like this is once the motor starts it never shuts off for the whole cycle, it just keeps running as it fills drains and spins, etc.

John
