Skillet Lasagna ...

I remember making this after getting really Super Stoned on some Mexican Weed around 1972 or 73 I remember being a senior in High School...

My friend and I ate the whole thing and had a stomach ache for days. LOL!!! It was so good and we were so stoned but after reading the ingredients it's no wonder. The advent of major Food Preservatives and additives.

And Thanks Louis for all your time and these wonderful memories. I hope you are well.

Steamed Cherry Pudding

Here in the UK we have a long tradition of various steamed puddings - actually savoury and sweet - either cooked in a bowl in or over a pan of water or in some cases boiled in a cotton or linen cloth. But I don't recall any US members mentioning such a thing. Is this also a tradition in America?

Hi Al. As far as I know, steamed puddings are not seen often here. Perhaps it was more popular in the 1930's.

Alistair, about 5 or 6 years ago, when looking through my Southern Living Cookbooks at Christmas meal suggestions, I came across a steamed pudding that was intended as a dessert, cooked in a double boiler on top of the stove (cooker).  I made it for my sister and I and it was wond3rful.  (She as very impressed).

At the store Thirsday,

they had an entire aisle end cap full of only Beefaroni. No other variety in stock, except a few cans of double stuffed ravioli.

I have never attempted Skillet Lasagna while high as I have never smoked Pot.  Some days I wish I did.  I have made Omelets and grilled sandwiches and cooked on the outside grill while I was biffed and never had a disaster.  Amazing what you can do on a Weber grill in the Wee Hours.

Had to do some catching up! Didn’t get a chance to view the last two batches of photos.

Reply 48: Chuck Wagon Beans—Have already pulled everything from the pantry to make these simple beans. I do plan to throw caution to the wind and use one whole clove of garlic, rather than the 1/2 clove called for, lol.

Reply 53: Was this a regional product? Super Coola was ahead of their time putting pop in cans. The only thing missing was a screw-top rather than the standard pop-top found on bottles of the time.

Thanks as always, Louie! I never fail to find something to try.

C&C soft drinks were still widely available in NYC until I was around my twenties. I remember their TV ads always targeting Pepsi and Coke. I think they were a regional bottler. C&C would occasionally show up in my home. They were always cheaper than the national brands. Nevertheless as a kid we were a Coke household. Sometime before my teen years we became a Pepsi household and never looked back. Boy do I miss Pepsi Light.

Always a pleasure Eugene, and let us know how the beans come out!

The beans were quite good, but another example of how classics like Chuck Wagon Beans evolve over time. Most of today’s recipes include a fair amount of brown sugar and often bacon, as well. I enjoy trying older recipes if only to compare the vintage versions to their contemporary counterparts.

I, too, grew up in a Coke household. If my sister and I asked for Coke at a restaurant and the response was, “Is Pepsi OK?” we’d always opt for some other beverage. Just for kicks, I switched to Pepsi one summer maybe 10 years ago and upon returning to Coke, was bowled over by how many bold flavors it has. Pepsi was clean and simple by comparison.

I'd never heard of C&C drinks until I saw an old ad for them hanging on the wall at Cracker Barrel.

The best baked beans I ever ate are called "Texas Baked Beans". I first had them in 1972 when we visited my mom's friend Thelma Cooper in Ft. Worth. We were so impressed with them that she gave my mom the recipe. We had them often after that, but I've only made them a few times since my mom passed away in 1995. They have bacon strips on the top. I'll have to try to find the recipe, and post it here.

I’m not familiar with Texas Baked Beans, but my Mom always put bacon strips on top of Hot Dogs and Beans when she made them.  This dish was a favorite of mine and she always made it for my birthday, per my request.

It was simply VanDeKamps Pork and Beans poured into a pyrex dish, sliced hot dog rounds mixed in, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, drizzled with Heinz Ketchup and raw bacon strips laid on top, then baked until hot and bubbly and the bacon crispy.  Served with buttered english muffins toasted under the broiler so the tops were crispy/crunchy and the bottoms were soft and chewy.  Yum!  I still make this, only now I use Bush’s Baked Beans.  One of David’s favorites now too.

Eddie, that sounds good. I rarely eat hot dogs, but do like turkey sausages. They would probably work in that.

When I was growing up in Northern Ireland 50 years ago C&C was the major supplier of various lemonades - this was before Coke & Pepsi had achieved much, if any, market penetration - I had no idea that they were an American corporation, I always thought they were just a local manufacturer

C&C

They are still around, with their US soft drink headquarters in New Jersey. The company is based in Ireland, and has been in business since 1852.

I had forgotten about their C&C Television division. In 1955 they purchased the RKO Radio Pictures film library from General Tire & Rubber, which had just acquired RKO from Howard Hughes. TV stations who bought 16MM film packages from them got a life-of-print lease for those titles. The RKO introduction (with the radio tower) was removed, and a "C&C Movie time" title inserted. The end frames with the RKO triangle were also replaced with C&C. Commercials for C&C soda were shown during the original airings. Since the stations got rights to show these films until they were worn out, some prints still exist, and may still be being shown. Some VHS tapes and DVDs of RKO titles are sourced from these. The C&C versions also sometimes ended up as 16MM rental prints for schools, etc. Our HS saw a Marx Brothers movie in the early 70's that was such a print. The contrast in these prints is intentionally low, due to the TV technology of the time they were transferred. Warner now owns the rights to RKO titles, and has made their DVDs and Blu-rays from better sources, such as 35MM fine grain masters.
